The Heritage Christian boys basketball team used a solid defensive effort to top Nikiski 54-18 on Thursday in the opening round of the Southcentral Conference basketball tournament at Nikiski.
Steve Hanks had 15 points and Quinton Paul had 10 points for the Eagles, who only allowed two points in the first half. Kenny Fagan had eight points for Nikiski.
Heritage will play Houston in the semifinals today at 4 p.m., while Nikiski will play Susitna Valley at 1 p.m. in the fourth-place bracket.
Anchorage Christian Schools boys 67, Seward 52
The Lions outscored the Seahawks 19-7 in the final eight minutes to advance to the semifinals of the tournament and eliminate the Seahawks from state contention.
Chad Dyson had a monster game for ACS, scoring 32 points. Robert Perea and Caleb Adelmann each had 12 points for the Seahawks.
Houston girls 49, Seward 39
The Hawks took a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and turned it into a victory on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the tournament and set up a 5:30 p.m. game today against Nikiski.
Houston’s Caylee Redford had 20 points to lead all scorers, while Jen Mason added 10. For Seward, Ivana Banic pumped in 14 points.
Grace Christian girls 43, Susitna Valley 18
The Grizzlies used a balanced scoring attack to earn a spot in the semifinals.
Liz Metcalf had eight points for Grace Christian, while Margie Dupea, Rosie Berg and Mariah Van Horne each had six points. For Susitna Valley, Megan Ostermick led all scorers with 10 points.
The Grizzlies will play in the semifinals against ACS at 2:30 p.m. today while Susitna Valley will play Seward in the fourth-place game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Houston boys 59, Susitna Valley 39
Donovan Parker pumped in 18 points to lead the Hawks into the semifinals.
Houston led 39-37 at the end of three quarters, then outscored the Rams 20-2 in the final period to wrap up the victory. Travis Clark had 16 points for Su Valley.
Houston will play in the semifinals against Heritage at 4 p.m. today, while Su Valley will play in the fourth-place bracket at 1 p.m. today against Nikiski.
