Hakkinen finishes 54th in pursuit

Kasilof biathlete Jay Hakkinen finished 54th in a World Cup 12.5-kilometer pursuit on Saturday in Khanty Mansiysk, Russia. Hakkinen had eight shooting penalties and was 7 minutes, 19.4 seconds, behind winner Emile Hegle Svendsen of Norway.

Kenai River drops 2 to Ice Dogs

Kenai River dropped to 0-10 against intrastate rival Fairbanks with a pair of losses on Friday and Saturday,

After falling to the Ice Dogs 3-0 on Friday, the Brown Bears lost 5-2 on Saturday before 2,121 fans at Big Dipper Ice Arena.

Brock Shelgren staked Fairbanks to a 1-0 lead when he netted a power-play tally just 7:30 into Saturday's game, but Kenai River responded when Tony McDonald also scored on a power play off assists from Nick Simson and Justin Hancock.

It was all Ice Dogs the rest of the way.

Ryan Kayfes added a tally midway through the first and Ryan Santana and Austin Block both lit the lamp in the final 3:34 of the second for a commanding 4-1 lead after two.

Derek Bradish extended the cushion when he beat Kenai River goaltender Matt Wichorek (29 saves, 34 shots) before Brett Englebright scored the Brown Bears second goal with 6:23 remaining in the game off assists from Matt McNamee and Adam Krefski.

The Brown Bears, who were outshot 34-22, were just 1 for 10 on the power play while the Ice Dogs went 2 for 5.

In Friday's game in front of 2,009 fans, Fairbanks took a 1-0 lead 11:01 into the first period when Andrew McCabe scored on assists from Alex McRae and Peter Kavaya. Drew Darwitz made it 2-0 just 28 seconds later on assists from McRae and Kavaya.

Kenai River returns to the Soldotna Sports Center on Friday and Saturday for 7 p.m. games against the Alexandria Blizzard.
