Rita and Roscoe Helleck
Roscoe "Rocky" and Rita Helleck of Sterling will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Monday, March 10, 2008. The couple was married March 10, 1958, in Ackerly, Texas.
Rocky grew up around Blooming Prairie, Minn. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the destroyer USS Dashiell from 1952 to 1956. In 1956 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and received basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He served for more than 20 years in the military before retiring in 1972.
Rita grew up in Big Spring, Texas, and was active in theatre, singing, and athletics before marrying in 1958. The couple raised their family at various locations across the United States and Japan, traveling for the military before retiring in Anchorage at Elmendorf Air Force Base.
After retiring from the military, Rocky worked at the Van Dusen Tank Farm at the Anchorage International Airport for more than 10 years and Rita worked in civil service, mostly at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on Elmendorf for more than 25 years. She received commendations and recognitions for outstanding service.
