Area man graduates Navy recruit center
Bryan M. Brooks graduated from the Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill., on Feb. 7. His parents, Wayne Brooks of Kenai, and Bobbie Brooks of Chanute, Kan., attended, as did his sister, Brenna Brooks Talbot of Sterling.
Bryan is a 2000 graduate of Soldotna High School. He held the position of Division Yeoman in his Navy class and will continue his Navy education in South Carolina.
SoHi student wins Violet Richardson award
Jennifer Senette has been selected as the winner of the Soroptimist International of Twin Cities Violet Richardson Award.
Senette is an active volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club in Kenai, has coached indoor and outdoor soccer leagues for boys and girls and was a youth counselor at the Boys and Girls Club.
She is a senior at Soldotna High School, where she participates in Kids Camps, services as captain of the basketball team and is a leader in her senior class.
The Violet Richardson program recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts. Soroptimist International of Twin Cities presented Senette with a check for $200. Kathy Ehrhardt, athletic director of the Boys and Girls Club, also received a $200 check.
Senette now will advance to the Soroptimist Northwestern award level to compete for $1,000, which will be matched with a contribution to the winner's volunteer organization.
Kenai grad completes basic training
Air Force Airman Jason M. Young has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. During the six weeks of training, Young studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches; and received instruction in physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and human relations.
In addition, he earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
Young is the son of Michael and Jeannette Young of Kenai and a 2002 graduate of Kenai Central High School.
Soldotna student receives scholarship
Caleb Sizemore of Soldotna has been awarded a $1,500 Mary Miller Alumni Scholarship from Valley City State University in Valley City, N.D. The scholarships are made available as a result of support from alumni and friends of the university. Recipients are selected based on their high school grades, ACT or SAT scores and high school class rank.
Sizemore will graduate from Soldotna High School in May.
