Peninsula skiers compete at Junior Olympics

Several cross-country skiers from the Kenai Peninsula competed at the Junior Olympics in Truckee, Calif., in long-distance freestyle races Wednesday.

Homer graduate Aleta Phelps posted the peninsula's top finish, taking 11th in the girls Older Junior 10-kilometer race.

Conditions were tough for peninsula skiers, with temperatures reaching 39 F.

In the girls 10-kilometer Junior 1 race, Skyview's Elisabeth Habermann was 18th while Soldotna's Katie Franzmann was 42nd and Katy Pankoski was 51st.

In the boys 15-kilometer Junior 1 race, Skyview's Noah King was 71st.
