After writing about Whitney Leman's basketball career at Eastern Oregon University, last week I found out that she was honored in a special way during the last 6.5 seconds of the season. Lady Mounties' basketball coach, Anji Weissenfluh, called Whitney to the floor so she could savor the final moments of the championship game as EOU won its fifth consecutive Cascade Conference title. Whitney had been injured with a torn achilles tendon during pre-season practice and was unable to play during the entire season. Even though she couldn't play, she traveled with the team.

Ninilchik Emergency Services is having its annual membership drive and needs support to be able to continue to provide emergency response within the community. It receives no tax funding and the $25 dues and extra donations are used to train local emergency medical technicians and firefighter volunteers and to maintain and operate emergency equipment.

EMS coordinator, Gina Wiste said she is proud to be a part of the NES team of volunteers.

"It is a great reward to be part of a smart team of people that train on their own time to learn life saving skills and be available to serve their community," she said. She said she especially admires those who have dedicated so many years of service in our community such as Mike Chihuly, Sue Simonds, Gerry Byrne and Helena Bock.

Gina also is coordinating the dessert auction that will take place at the celebrity waiter event the Kenai Peninsula Fair's annual fundraiser that will take place April 5. If you would like to donate a dessert for the auction, take it to the fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. the day of the auction. Last year, Debbie Cary donated a chocolate cake that went for $600.

The Ninilchik Community Library is selling raffle tickets for an Easter basket of goodies and a 53 by 82 Easter quilt. You may buy your tickets at the library until the day of the drawing that will be held Friday at the library.

If you are a junior in high school and interested in government and the election process, then you may be interested in joining Alaska Girls State. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors the event and applications are available. Girls State Alaska takes place in Wasilla, and will run from June 7 through 14. Call Girls State co-director Debra Henderson at 252-3544 and she will direct you to your area representative.
