UNALASKA (AP) -- A political newcomer is Unalaska's new mayor.
With absentee ballots counted, Paul Larsen emerged the victor in Monday's runoff election, winning 271 votes to the 262 cast for rival Dick Davis.
Larsen is a mechanic and foreman of a truck repair shop. He's lived in Unalaska for the last 10 years. He said he'll probably spend up to 10 hours a week on his mayoral duties
The position pays $700 a month.
Larsen will serve as mayor until the regular election in October. The vacancy was created in December when Frank Kelty stepped down to become the city's natural resource analyst.
The runoff election was prompted by last month's special election, when none of the five candidates received 40 percent of the vote.
