ANCHORAGE (AP) -- An Anchorage man was charged with drug trafficking for allegedly trying to smuggle marijuana into the western Alaska village of Stebbins.
Jelani Hedgspeth, 27, was stopped at the Stebbins airport last Thursday. He agreed to a search of his luggage, Alaska State Troopers said. When an investigator noticed what appeared to be plastic bags concealed inside a DVD player, he withdrew his consent for the search and the DVD player was seized.
Meanwhile, a search warrant was obtained. On Friday, investigators found about 188-grams of marijuana, worth nearly $17,000, packaged in 375 individual half-gram baggies inside the DVD player.
Hedgspeth was arrested in Unalakleet trying to return to Anchorage. He was charged with one count of misconduct involving a controlled substance and transferred to the Anvil Mountain Correctional Center in Nome.
