Norma B. Carey

Soldotna resident Norma B. Carey died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Central Peninsula General Hospital in Soldotna with her family on both sides after a difficult struggle with lung disease complications. She was 75.

A vigil and rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Soldotna. A memorial mass will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Father Frank Reitter will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Carey was born March 12, 1927, in Tulsa, Okla. She was a devoted member of her church, Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Soldotna, which she and her husband, Ed Onstott, helped build in 1961. The church was later named Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

She loved being a Democratic Party activist from her college days as president of the New Mexico Young Democrats to working in the campaigns of Bill Egan, Mike Gravel and Nick Begich in Alaska. She was a community activist as a founding member of the Soldotna Lioness' and participated in the Eagles and VFW.

Mrs. Carey was preceded in death by her husbands, Lt. Com. David W. Carey, USN, and Edwin S. Onstott; her daughter, Jennifer Garcia; and daughter-in-law, Paulette P. Carey.

She is survived by her sons, Ryan "Mike" Carey and David Carey of Soldotna; daughters, Colleen Posey of Wortham, Texas, and Vicki Leach of Soldotna; grandchildren, Eric, Robyn, Valarie, Victoria, Kristy, Brooke, Cody, Misti, Autumn, Michael, Tamara, Daryl-David, Ian, David, Dale and Liam; and many great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
