Kachemak ski club plans races

The Kachemak Nordic Ski Club's Junior Nordic Ultima and Wooden Ski Classic is scheduled for Saturday at Lookout Mountain in Homer. The event includes a 2-kilometer fun race for all ages, a 5-kilometer race for skiers 13 and younger, a 10-kilometer race for skiers high school-aged and younger, and a 2-kilometer Wooden Ski Classic for skiers who long for the good old days. The event also will include relays, games, awards for best finishes, traditional attire and oldest skies, and prize drawings.

The Kachemak Marathon is scheduled for Sunday at Baycrest Trails in Homer and will feature a 20-kilometer and a 42-kilometer race.

Saturday's events start with the Wooden Ski Classic at 1 p.m. Sunday's marathon is slated to get under way at 11 a.m.

Winter salmon derby slated for March 19

The 12th annual Homer Winter King salmon Tournament is slated for March 19.

The event includes a full day of salmon fishing with prizes awarded every 10 minutes; a pretournament party at 6 p.m. March 18 at the Salty Dawg Saloon; a raffle for two round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines good for destinations in the western U.S. and Mexico; boat side bets; $90,000 in cash and merchandise prizes; youth awards; and an awards ceremony with food and beverages at the end of the tournament. Participants who register by 6 p.m. March 17 will be entered in an early-bird drawing for round-trip tickets on Era Aviation from Homer to Anchorage.

Winning fish are generally in the 20- to 35-pound range. Last year's winner was worth $15,561.
