Nikolaevsk ends CIA girls' season

Posted: Friday, March 11, 2005

The fifth-seeded Nikolaevsk Warriors ended the Cook Inlet Academy Eagles girls basketball season Thursday with a 37-33 win at Soldotna Middle School.

Both teams were trying to keep their seasons going in consolation action of the Peninsula Conference tournament after losing their first games on Wednesday.

The Warriors, who had lost to Lumen Christi in their first game, overcame dismal foul shooting and had a big fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

"It was the first time in four years that we beat them," Nikolaevsk girls coach Brent Keene said. "We were finally able to put together a complete game for the win."

CIA took an early lead by outscoring the Warriors by a 9-4 clip by the end of the first quarter, despite shooting only 2-of-14 from the floor.

In the second period, Nikolaevsk converted on four CIA turnovers and received 11 points from Nikki Melkomukov to turn the game around and take a 19-16 lead at halftime.

The Warriors' offense went cold in the third quarter, though, as CIA outscored Nikolaevsk 11-2 and took back the lead going into the fourth quarter with a 27-21 cushion.

With just under three minutes to go in the game, Nikolaevsk took a 32-31 lead after Melkomukov scored inside. Sonya Reutov knocked the ball loose from CIA's Brooke Forsi on the next play, which led to two free throws and 34-31 Nikolaevsk lead.

CIA was given one last chance after Melissa Moffis hit a long jumper following a backcourt violation by Nikolaevsk with 47 seconds left, but Reutov went 2-of-4 from the line in the final seconds to seal the win.

"We are more confident now and it just feels great to win," Reutov said.

Melkomukov led all scorers with 21 points, while Moffis led CIA with 13 and Alyse Bell added 12.

"We played hard and it was a tough one to lose, but they (Nikolaevsk) just played a great game," CIA girls coach Greg Bell said.

Lumen Christi boys 72, Seldovia 70, 2 OT

In earlier consolation action, the Seldovia boys fell short against Lumen Christi, dropping a double-overtime thriller.

Jimmie Payton had a game-high 26 points in the loss and Colton Collier added 19 as the Sea Otters' season came to a close.

Dan George and Phil Chinnery paced Lumen Christi with 19 points apiece.
