Wasilla boys defend NLC championship

Staff report

Northern Lights Conference Player of the Year Jesse Bean hit a jumper with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lead Wasilla to a 63-62 NLC championship win over Colony at Kenai Central High School Saturday night.

Bean finished with 22 points to lead all scorers. His game-winner came moments after Colony’s Ryan Coffman put the Knights ahead by one with less than 30 seconds left to play. Jeremiah Collins added 11 points for Wasilla.

Saturday’s third-place boys game

T.J. Fullmer scored 16 points to lead Palmer to its second win of the day and a berth in the state tournament with a 40-33 win over Kodiak in the boys’ third-place game. Palmer held Kodiak to just 16 points in the second half.

Saturday’s third-place girls game

Ashley Swetzof scored 15 points and Kelsey Campbell netted 12 in leading Palmer to a third-place finish with a victory over the Mariners on Saturday.

Reba Temple scored 10 points for Homer, which was outscored 19-7 in the fourth quarter.

“It’s obvious that Palmer has more numbers,” said Homer coach Tim Daugharty. “They kept running more girls onto the floor than we could match up with and that was really the telltale sign, especially in that third place game.”

Homer 50, Skyview 33

Rachel Bornheimer and Temple each netted a team-high 15 points as the Mariners defeated the Panthers en route to the third-place game.

Allison Horazdovsky added 12 points for Homer, which owned a 13-point edge after three periods.

The Mariners limited the Panthers’ main threats, Nicole Van Ryzin and Melissa Fay, to eight and 12 points, respectively.

“Those two girls on that team are absolutely winners,” Daugharty said. “They’re fabulous.

“We basically keyed on them and did something a little different than I think they’d seen before, defensively,” he added.
