Area skiers get solid start at JOs

Area skiers got off to a solid start at the Junior Olympics at Kincaid Park in Anchorage on Monday in classic sprint races. In the Junior Olympics, the area skiers are racing against the best skiers in the country in their age group.

Erick Romig, a graduate of Skyview High School now at the University of Alaska Anchorage, made it to the "B" Final of the 1.25-kilometer classic sprint. Romig won that "B" Final and finished sixth amongst Older Junior skiers.

Soldotna High School's Kailey Mucha made it to the quarterfinals before she was eliminated. Mucha ended up finishing 14th amongst Junior 1 skiers. Kenai Central's Molly Watkins picked up a 44th place finish in the Junior 1 category.

The Junior Olympics continue at Kincaid on Wednesday with a classic mass start race.

State basketball brackets announced

The brackets for the state basketball tournament have been announced.

The Kenai Central boys have been seeded sixth in the Class 4A tournament. Kenai will play No. 3 Dimond on March 20 at 9:40 a.m. at West High School.

In the Class 2A girls tournament, Cook Inlet plays Yakutat on March 18 at 8:30 p.m. at Sullivan Arena, while Ninilchik plays Northway on March 18 at 1 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.

In the Class 2A boys tournament, Seldovia plays Angoon at 3:30 p.m. on March 18 at the Sullivan Arena.
