Kodiak boys rally to drag down Seahawks

The Seahawks caught the Bears by surprise in a nonregion game, taking a 22-16 lead at the half before Kodiak rallied for the 54-49 win Saturday.

Blake Varnell led the Seahawks out of the gate with 10 points in the first quarter. Brian Blankenship totaled 21 points for Seward, knocking down four 3-pointers.

The Bears pulled to within three points (36-33) in the third quarter, and Nick Billings fueled Kodiak's homestretch run with eight points in the fourth quarter.

The Seward girls finished off their season on a high note Saturday, getting a home win against Homer in a nonregion game.

Erin Carr pulled in a game-high 29 points. Ruth Banse and Carrie Fisher also broke into double figures for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks held on to an early lead to defeat Heritage Christian in a District 3/3A game in Seward.

Seward led 10-7 after the first quarter and managed to stay one step ahead of the Eagles the rest of the way.

Ruth Banse netted 16 points for the Seahawks, leading all scorers, while teammate Erin Carr went 6-for-6 from the free throw line to finish with 13 points.

Clint Draper scored a game-high 11 points for the Seahawks, but 10 different Kodiak players found their way into the scoring column, led by Godfrey Agmata's 10 points.

Skyview trailed the Mariners by just two points, 21-19, at the half, but Homer went on a 24-7 run in the third quarter to the Regions III/4A game out of reach.

Lauren Trimble and Sheena Cundiff each scored 14 points for the Mariners. Four players, Stephanie St. Clair, Samantha Carlon, Autumn Thurmond and Christina Colvin, netted five points each for the Panthers.

Aaron Steiner scored six of his 11 points in the first quarter as the Mariners jumped out to an early lead and hung on for a Region III/4A win.

Dan Davis scored 14 points and Nolan Rose netted 11 points, including a trio of treys, for the Panthers, but their efforts weren't enough to overcome the early deficit.

Sean Haynes netted 14 points to lead Homer's offense.

The Eagles held off the an early charge in a District 3/2A game, but Community Christian's Kristen Engebretsen helped open up a second-half lead, scoring 11 of her 19 points during the Knights' 15-6 third-quarter run.

Sara McLeod kept the Eagles in the game early, netting 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first half.

The Eagles took command of their District 3/2A game against Community Christian early, racing to a 28-10 halftime lead.

Justin Franchino had the hot hand for the Eagles in the first half, pouring in 12 of his 16 points. Noah Shields also scored 16 for the Eagles while teammate Eric Minelga chipped in with 10 points.

Karl Keim knocked down 13 points for the Knights and Phillip Jones netted nine points.
