Area students awarded scholarships

Jessica Jetret Arness, a senior at Nikiski Middle-Senior High School, has been selected as a Western Washington University President's Scholar. She will receive a two-year tuition waiver worth $5,000 from Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash.

Shaun Williams, a senior at Soldotna High School, has been awarded a Valley City State University V-500 Foundation Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 for the 2001-02 academic year.

His is the son of Ric and Karen Williams of Soldotna.

Soldotna men graduate airborne training

Army Pvt. Nathan C. Mallette recently graduated from the three-week airborne training course at the Army Airborne School at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

He is the son of Doug J. and Holly E. Mallette of Soldotna.

Army Pvt. Travis N. Hiner recently graduated from the three-week airborne training course at the Army Airborne School at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.

He is the son of Tim D. and Kim L. Hiner of Soldotna.

According to a press release, during the first week of training, both men underwent a rigorous physical training program and received instruction in the theory of parachuting. The second week, they received practical training by jumping from 34-foot and 250-foot towers. In the final week, both made five static-line parachute jumps, including one night jump from an in-flight aircraft.
