Ketchikan nurses approve hospital pact

KETCHIKAN (AP) -- Nurses in Ketchikan have ratified their first contract with Ketchikan General Hospital.

The contract got approval of 39 of the 47 nurses who voted, out of 65 eligible to cast ballots.

The new contract guarantees nurses a minimum of $20.94 an hour, with pay steps that bring the top minimum to $37.64.

The agreement allows nurses to work in more than one department of the hospital, so they can continue to get work when their department has few patients.

The nurses formed the union last May. It took about six months to work out the deal.
