Wasilla girls keep crown

For the second straight year, the Homer girls basketball team met Wasilla in the championship game of the Northern Lights Conference tournament and lost.

The Warriors defeated the Mariners 52-43 Saturday night at Colony High School as both teams clinched a berth to the state tournament. Homer had a 29-20 lead at halftime, but Wasilla outscored the Mariners 32-14 in the second half to clinch the title.

The Warriors used a balanced scoring attack to clinch the title. Ashley Semler had 15 points, while Anne Wesser, Hillarie Putnam and Jenna Johnson each had 11 points. Kayla Creamer had 15 points for Homer, while Reba Temple added 10.

The result of the boys championship game between Kodiak and Wasilla was not available as the Clarion went to press.

Colony girls 49, Soldotna 23

The Knights used a stifling defense to win the third-place game Saturday and advance to state.

Kelcy Joynt paced Colony with 16 points. Paige Blackburn had 13 points for Soldotna and was one of three Soldotna players to score.

Colony boys 57, Homer 50

Just like the girls, the Colony boys earned a state trip by winning the third-place game.

Ryan Gray led the way for Colony with 21 points. The Knights outscored the Mariners 16-2 in the third quarter. Homer’s Luke Gilbert also had 21 points.

Soldotna girls 48, Skyview 40

The Stars ended the season of the Panthers and advanced to the third-place game on Saturday.

Soldotna’s Liz Denna had 14 points while Mikala Smith and Paige Blackburn had 12 points apiece to overcome the hot shooting of Skyview’s Anna Blake, who had 20 points.

Colony girls 48, Palmer 36

The Knights ended the season of the Moose and advanced to the third-place game on Saturday. Kelcy Joynt had 15 points for Palmer, while Kara Larson had 11 points. Matti Cox had 11 points for Palmer.

Homer boys 65, Soldotna 55

Luke Gilbert poured in 26 points and Justin Smith added 10 as the Mariners ended the Stars’ season and advanced to the third-place game on Saturday.

For Soldotna, Tony Besse had 18 points, Kelly Seggerman had 16 points and Brian Blossom had 13 points.

Colony boys 42, Palmer 40

The Knights advanced to the third-place game by edging the Moose on Saturday. Ryan Gray had 12 points to pace the Knights in the defensive battle.

Friday’s games

Homer girls 47, Knights 38

The Mariners earned a trip to the state tournament by defeating the Knights on their home floor behind 22 points from Reba Temple.

Homer outscored Colony 14-8 in the second quarter to take a 25-18 lead into halftime and was able to make that lead hold up. Allison Horazdovsky added 10 points for the Mariners.

Wasilla girls 54, Soldotna 27

The Warriors stormed into the final by defeating the Stars and earning a state berth. Jenna Johnson had 18 points for Wasilla, while Ashley Semler had 17 points.

Palmer girls 50, Kenai Central 45

The Moose ended the season of the Kardinals in the third-place quarterfinals. A boxscore was not available for the game.

Skyview girls 52, Kodiak 46

The Panthers defeated the Bears in the third-place quarterfinals. Shelly Heffner paced Skyview with 13 points in the game, while Allison Fay added 11 points. Kodiak received 18 points from Alysa Horn.

Wasilla boys 57, Soldotna 39

The Warriors defeated the Stars in the semifinals of the tournament Friday to earn a trip to state.

Wasilla had just a 35-32 lead heading into the third quarter, but the Warriors outscored the Stars 22-7 in the final frame. Jesse Bean had 23 points for Wasilla. Brian Blossom had 13 points for Soldotna, while Kelly Seggerman added 10.

Kodiak boys 44, Palmer 41

The Bears punched their ticket to state by defeating the Moose in the semifinals Friday. Curtis Catt had 11 points for Palmer, while Mark Putney had 10 points. For Palmer, Aaron Kohring and DJ Mouton each had 10 points.

Colony boys 65, Skyview 44

The Panthers saw their season end in the third-place quarterfinals.

Doug Gray had 13 points to lead Colony, while Grant Niver and Tim Egger each had 12 points. For Skyview, Jeff Dolifka had 13 points.

Homer boys 58, Kenai Central 50

The Mariners defeated the Kardinals 58-50 in the third-place quarterfinals to end Kenai’s season.

For Homer, Luke Gilbert had 18 points, Justin Smith had 15 points and Jeremy Andrews had 10 points. Kenai’s Kevin Epperheimer led all scorers with 22 points.
