CIA boys win Peninsula Conference championship

After losing title game to Bristol Bay, Ninilchik girls come back and defeat Lumen Christi for state berth

The Cook Inlet Academy Eagles boys basketball team clinched a state berth by defeating Seldovia in convincing fashion 63-29 during the Peninsula Conference boys championship game at Bristol Bay High School.

Jeremy Franchino drained five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 19 points in the victory. Nate Byrd added 13 points and Scott Litchfield pitched in 10 points for CIA.

After a close first quarter score of 12-7, in CIA’s favor, the Eagles opened the second quarter with 10-0 run to take command of the game and by halftime they held a 32-13 advantage.

In the second half, CIA’s bench took over and the Eagles cruised to victory.

“These kids have worked hard all year and improved with every game it seems. I am superproud of them,” CIA coach Greg Bell said.

Seldovia was led by Colton Collier’s six points. The championship game was Seldovia’s first since 2000, while CIA has played in each of the last five.

Bristol Bay boys 59, Seldovia 46

Bristol Bay clinched the second seed to state with a win against Seldovia in the Peninsula Conference Tournament second-place game Saturday.

The Angels were able to run away from Seldovia in the first period, notching a 25-9 lead early. Seldovia made a run in the second half, but couldn’t quite make it over the hump as the Angels won.

Mason King scored 30 points in the win, including four 3-pointers. Levi West-Harkness and Evan Mickelson each scored 13 points for Seldovia.

Bristol Bay boys 70, Ninilchik 60

Bristol Bay advanced to the second-place game against Seldovia with a win over Ninilchik in consolation action during the Peninsula Conference Tournament.

The Angels used outscored the Wolverines 21-10 in the second period and held on for the win.

Mason King poured in a tournament high 33 points for the Angels, while Austin Vanderford led Ninilchik with 17 points. Hobbled Jesse Leman hit four 3-pointers and added 12 points in the loss.

Ninilchik boys 76, Lumen Christi 29

The Ninilchik boys rebounded from Thursday’s defeat against Seldovia and overcame the loss of starter Jesse Leman to move into the second-place game of the Peninsula Conference Tournament.

Leman injured his knee in the game against Seldovia and did not play against the Archangels Friday.

Austin Vanderford filled in the gap, though, and led the Wolverines with 22 points and Danny Roderick netted 14 of his 20 points in the second half. Sean Dwyer added 11 points and Mike Skrypchyk and Deonte Powe each pitched in 10 points apiece for the Wolverines.

Phillip Dixon scored 10 points to lead the Archangles.

Bristol Bay girls 46, Ninilchik 43

Bristol Bay’s Nena Smith sank two clutch free throws in front of a packed gymnasium crowd with five seconds remaining to seal the Peninsula Conference girls championship game against Ninilchik Friday at Bristol Bay High School.

With the victory the Angles clinched the first seed at the upcoming state tournament while Ninilchik fell into the second-place game against Seldovia.

Ninilchik’s Ashley Bartolowits hit two free-throws with 50 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to give the Wolverines a 43-42 lead.

The Angels’ Jackie West responded with a turnaround jump shot that banked in. A Ninilchik turnover on the ensuing possession set up the foul that put Smith on the line to seal the win.

Krista Leman scored 19 points for Ninilchik, while West finished with 13 points to lead Bristol Bay.

Ninilchik girls 53, Lumen Christi 43

Ninilchik overcame a slow start to snatch the second seed to state during the Peninsula Conference Tournament’s second-place game Saturday.

Lumen Christi, playing its second game of the day, jumped to a quick 16-1 lead over the Wolverines by the end of the first quarter, but Ninilchik responded by outscoring the Archangels 26-8 in the second quarter while grabbing a 27-24 halftime lead.

Lumen Christi stayed close through the third period, but ran out of gas down the stretch as the Wolverines held on for the win.

Krista Leman and Kendra Moerlein each scored 14 points to lead the Wolverines and Heidi Skjold pitched in with 11 points.

Nikele Krueger led Lumen Christi with 19 points.

Lumen Christi girls 48, Seldovia 39

After being knotted at 25 at halftime, Lumen Christi held the Sea Otters to single-digit scoring in each the third and fourth quarter while extending a slim lead.

The win pushed the Archangels into the second-place game of the Peninsula Conference Tournament against Ninilchik.

Seldovia shot only 6-of-22 from the free-throw line in the second half, including 4-of-16 free-throw shooting in the fourth period.

Jennifer Giles led Seldovia with 13 points, while May Henry hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead Lumen Christi.

Seldovia girls 38, Cook Inlet Academy 23

The Sea Otters extended their season with a win Friday against the Eagles in the consolation bracket of the Peninsula Conference Tournament.

Jennifer Giles scored 15 points to lead the Sea Otters and Naomi Gallien added 14 points.

Mellissa Moffis scored 13 points for CIA.
