Teenager's column sparks another teen's encouragement

Concerning Brittany West's Verbatim column on Feb. 12, I am an 18-year-old Christian teenager. I am sad to hear about your situation. I completely understand that you would not feel ready to have a child and be a mother. I would feel the same way. I am especially relieved that you did not abort your child because of this, but want to be a loving parent and give him a good home. That was certainly a good decision.

However, I must disagree with your solutions. You say that to stop all these teens from getting pregnant, they need better education about contraceptives, and free contraceptives need to be more available. But this is not the answer to the problem. We cannot blame government, Hollywood or other people for our actions.

Teenagers or not, we are responsible for the decisions we make. Teenagers shouldn't be encouraged to have sex with whoever they want, whenever they want. God wants us to wait until we are married. Then we will be ready to have children. The answer to the problem is not contraceptives; it's doing things God's way. Only His way will bring true happiness.

You are sorry that now that you are a mother and you will not be able to have the life you had planned. But let me encourage you. You have a high calling as a mother.

Whether you fulfill your dreams or not, someday your life will certainly come to an end, and you will meet the Creator and Lord of the universe as your judge. Will you have lived your life for yourself or for God? If you live for yourself in this life you will lose your life for eternity.

Hollywood and so many people in our society think teens cannot keep themselves from having sex before marriage, but we can. God has commanded us to. To give us all the contraceptives and freedom we want allowing us to live in a life of disobedience to God's commands will not solve the problem. The problem lies in our hearts. We need to turn from Hollywood's lies and believe God's word.

Do not be discouraged; there is so much fulfillment and joy for you in being a mother when you are doing it for God. Read the Bible for yourself. God has written this book as a letter to you. He loves you. He died for your sin. He is able to save you, teach you and comfort you. Make Him your counselor and friend.

Don't make the mistake of trusting in Hollywood, your friends or your own heart again. Trust in God. He has promised us that if we seek Him we will find Him, if we seek with all of our heart. Look to the Lord, for Hayden's sake.

Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and lean not on your own understanding, Proverbs 3:5.
