Area skiers compete at Junior Olympics

Kenai Central's Kailey Mucha, Soldotna High School's Bree Mucha and Maranda Merkes, and Cook Inlet Academy graduate Lars Arneson are all competing at the Junior Olympics this week in Presque Isle, Maine. The event is for the best junior skiers in the country.

The event started with classic sprints on Monday. Kailey Mucha, skiing in Older Junior, had the best peninsula finish. She made the A final and finished fourth. Mucha had the best qualifying time of the day. Merkes, skiing in Junior 2, did not make either of the finals, finishing 14th. Arneson, skiing in Older Junior, also did not make the finals, finishing 15th. Bree Mucha, racing in Junior 1, just missed out on qualifying for the quarterfinals, finishing 34th.

On Wednesday, the athletes skied in an interval start classic race. The race was supposed to be a mass start, but D'Anna Gibson, Kenai Central's coach, said there are some tough downhills on the course and snow conditions forced organizers to change to interval starts.

Kailey Mucha again led the peninsula by finishing 17th in the Older Junior 10-kilometer race. She had a time of 36:08.7, 2:12.2 behind the winner. In the Junior 2 five-kilometer classic race, Merkes finished in 21st place with a time of 19:16.0. She was 2:14.6 behind the winner. In the Junior 1 10-kilometer classic race, Bree Mucha finished 57th with a time of 38:00.2. She was 4:22.7 behind the winner. In the Older Junior 15-kilometer classic race, Arneson finished 25th in 46:20.7, 4:04.4 behind the winner.

Team Alaska is in second place in the race for the Alaska Cup after the two events. New England is in first place with 946 points, while Alaska has 584 points and Intermountain is in third with 385 points.
