FAIRBANKS (AP) -- A local corrections officer is under investigation by Alaska State Troopers and the Department of Corrections for allegedly smuggling contraband into the Fairbanks Correctional Facility, a prisons spokesman said.
Officials at both agencies, citing the ongoing investigation and privacy requirements of personnel matters, declined to release the identity of the officer.
Prisons spokesman Bruce Richards said the department handed its investigation off to troopers about two weeks ago. Troopers declined to comment on the matter.
The officer is suspected of smuggling contraband -- which could include drugs, alcohol, tobacco or even cash -- into the prison.
''We take any kind of case involving employees taking contraband into (facilities) very seriously because that's a very serious breach of security,'' Richards said.
Richards said the agency is waiting to hear back from troopers before deciding what to do next.
