Stars garner late win

Down by two points at the break, the Soldotna Stars stormed back in the second half Saturday night to defeat host Skyview, 54-39.

The Stars scored as many points in the third quarter as they had during the entire first half and shut down the Panthers offense to take the season-ending victory.

Skyview's Dan Davis led all scorers with 16 points. Nolan Rose added 11 for the Panthers.

Nick Christensen paced the Stars, with 13. Shaun Williams and Josh Demske both broke into double digits, getting 10 and 11 respectively.

Regional brackets announced

Saturday night's win propelled Soldotna to the top of the final Region III/4A south division standings.

The Stars will face the north division's fourth seed, Palmer, at the regional tournament this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Palmer High.

The Soldotna-Palmer matchup will be the first round's headline game, Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Other first round games will pit the Colony Knights against Kenai at 12:45 p.m., Wasilla and Skyview at 4:15 p.m. and Kodiak and Homer at 6 p.m.

Colony, with an 8-2 region record, finished atop the north division, followed by Wasilla and Kodiak, each with a 7-3 record. Because the Warriors won both their meetings against Kodiak, they took the second seed. Host Palmer brought up the rear, in the fourth slot.

The south division's seedings are Soldotna in first, then Homer, Skyview and Kenai.

On the girls side, Palmer and Wasilla tied for first a with matching 8-2 records. The teams split their regular season games so the next tie-breaker was used. Since the Moose had only one division loss, compared to Wasilla's two, the hosts will start the tournament as top seed for the north.

Behind Palmer and Wasilla are Colony and Kodiak.

Kenai is the south division's top seed, followed by Homer, Soldotna and Skyview.

The Stars will open the tournament against Wasilla at 11 a.m. Thursday. The Mariners and Knights will face off against each other at 2:30 p.m. Kenai and Kodiak will play at 4:15 p.m. at Colony High. Palmer and Skyview will close out the first round at 6 p.m.
