Soldotna boys clinch top seed

The Soldotna boys basketball team clinched the No. 1 seed in the Northern Lights Conference Southern Division Saturday with a 56-38 victory over host Kenai Central.

The Stars finish up at 5-5 in the conference, while Kenai's conference mark is at 4-6. The Northern Lights Conference tournament starts Thursday at Soldotna High School.

The Stars had a 36-30 lead after three quarters, then outscored the Kardinals 21-8 in the final quarter. Guard Ryan Hall had the hot hand for Soldotna in the final eight minutes, scoring 11 of his 13 points.

The Stars also got a healthy dose of offense inside, with Matt Hicks scoring 16 points and Tony Besse adding 13 points.

Jordan Jenckes had 14 points for Kenai, while Austin McLeod added 11.

Soldotna girls 32, Kenai Central 21

Kaylee Wilbanks and Jenni Stenga each had seven points as the visiting Stars topped the Kardinals in Northern Lights Conference action.

Samantha Calderwood of Kenai had eight points to lead all scorers in the defensive struggle.

Homer boys 48, Kodiak 44

The host Mariners received 13 points from Luke Gilbert Saturday to pick up a nonconference victory. Homer finishes the year at 2-8 in the Northern Lights Conference and 6-16 overall.

Curtis Cott had 13 points for Kodiak, while Zack Keplinger added 12 points.

Homer girls 38, Kodiak 21

The visiting Mariners received 16 points from Allison Horazdovsky and 14 points from Bailey Lowney in picking up a nonconference victory Saturday.

Seward girls 46, Heritage Christian 33

Lara Loomis and Juno Prochazka each had 11 points, and Teal Hetrick added 10 points, Saturday as the host Seahawks cruised to a Southcentral Conference victory.

Heritage boys 64, Seward 47

The visiting Eagles cruised to a Southcentral Conference victory Saturday despite 12 points from Seward's Coty Beck.

Homer girls 49, Kodiak 23

The visiting Mariners picked up a Northern Lights Conference victory Friday behind 13 points from Allison Horazdovsky.

Homer boys 49, Kodiak 41

Luke Gilbert scored 27 points to lead the host Mariners to a Northern Lights Conference victory Friday.

Mark Putney had 15 points for Kodiak, while Calen Johnson added 11.

Seward girls 52, Grace Christian 24

The Seahawks dominated the Grizzlies in a Southcentral Conference matchup Friday in Seward. Kylee Adelman paced the Seahawks with 16 points.

Grace Christian boys 44, Seward 39

Ryan Dieckgraeff had 16 points nad Corey Hetrick added 10, but it was not enough for the host Seahawks to overcome the Grizzlies Friday in a Southcentral Conference game.
