John David Gum II

Gums welcome son

Jessica and Michael Gum, of Anchorage, announce the birth of their son, John David Gumm II, on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at 8:41 p.m., at Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces, and measured 21 inches. John's grandparents are Diane and Wayne Buchanan, of Soldotna; and Donna and the late John Gum, of Anchorage.

Soldotna siblings earn UAA honors

A brother and sister from Soldotna made the University of Alaska Anchorage Chancellor's List (4.0 GPA) for the Fall of 2010. Benjamin Woodland is a junior majoring in International Studies and German Language. He has made the list for the last five semesters. Jasmine Woodland is a freshman majoring in Environment and Society. Both are attanding on academic scholarships. The parents are Darlene and Bruce Fisher, of Soldotna; and Forrest Woodland, also of Soldotna.

Student participates in service project

Kelsey White, a junior psychology major from Soldotna, is participating in Northwestern College's Spring Break Service Project. 170 students from the Orange City, Iowa, school travel to different parts of the country and around the world to participate in service projects. White is finishing a trip to Opelousas, La., where she has been assisting in construction, tutoring and community clean-up projects.

Spring break hours at Nikiski pool

Nikiski Pool spring break hours from March 15 -- 20 are Tuesday through Thursday, Open Swim and Lap Swim from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., with Waterslide starting at 1 p.m. Friday's hours are from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. for Open swim, Lap Swim and Waterslide all day. Saturday and Sunday hours are Open Swim, Lap Swim and Water Slide from 1 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. For more information call Nikiski Pool at 776-8800.

Seed starting class scheduled

A free class about starting flowers and vegetables from seed will be held March 16 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Kenai Peninsula College. Kathy Wartinbee will be speaking. Pre-register for the workshop by calling the Cooperative Extension Service office at 262-5824 by March 15.
