ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Gov. Tony Knowles has nominated an Alaska Native leader to the federal North Pacific Fishery Management Council.

Hazel Nelson, president of Becharof Corp., the Native corporation for the village of Egegik, would replace Dillingham resident Robin Samuelsen on the 11-member council if approved by the U.S. Commerce secretary. The panel helps regulate major commercial fisheries off Alaska.

Samuelsen has served the maximum number of three-year terms.

Nelson also is on the board of Bristol Bay Economic Development Corp., which is heavily involved in Bering Sea fisheries.
