No place like Nome

Soldotna veterinarian Jayne Hempstead drives a dog team up Front Street in Nome with Col. Norman Vaughan carrying a box of diphtheria serum as the Serum Run Expedition reaches its terminus Wednesday. Joining Hempstead from the central peninsula were her husband, Iditarod veteran Bob Hempstead, Mike Kunz, Ed Borden and Bill Berkhahn. The Nenana to Nome Serum Run Expedition is held each year to retrace the original delivery of lifesaving diphtheria serum shipped by dog team in 1925.
