ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Elmendorf Air Force Base awarded a long-awaited housing contract to Aurora Military Housing Thursday.
The contract calls for the company to build 421 military housing units and renovate 200 existing units. Base officials said 48 of the new units will replace 176 units to be demolished.
Construction of the new units is scheduled to begin Friday, and work on the first 100 units to be restored will begin in November.
Officials said they opted for this plan because it will help alleviate housing shortages more quickly than with traditional procedures.
