A Nikiski man and Sterling woman were involved in a head-on crash Friday at Mile 67 of the Sterling Highway in Turnagain Pass, near the rest area.

At about 4 p.m., Lucas Hulien, 24, of Nikiski, and Anna Steik-Grant, 38, of Sterling, struck each other head-on. Hulien was driving a 2002 Toyota pickup truck and Steik-Grant was driving a 2000 Dodge pickup.

According to troopers, who responded from Girdwood and Cooper Landing, Hulien got out of his truck and tried to help Steik-Grant and her passenger, Danielle Ballard, 21, of Fairbanks. The two needed to be extracted by emergency personnel once they arrived at the scene.

All three were transported to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time.

Weather conditions are thought to be a major factor in the crash, as the area was getting heavy snowfall and strong winds. There was approximately 6 inches of snow on the road at the time of the crash.

According to troopers, there were five more crashes in the area due to drivers not being able to stop in time to avoid the crashed pickups. Those accidents resulted in minor damages and injuries.

The highway was closed until about 6:30 p.m. Friday, and motorists were strongly cautioned against driving from Potter's Marsh to the "Y" until weather conditions improved. Blizzard conditions did subside by Saturday.
