Thirty-seven compete in Kachemak Marathon

Posted: Tuesday, March 16, 2004

A field of 37 competitors took to the Baycrest Trails Sunday for the Kachemak Marathin freestyle cross-country ski race in Homer.

The challenging, hilly course covered a 21-kilometer loop and a 43-kilometer loop. Skies were overcast for the event with the temperature near 32.

One of the traditions established by the Kachemak Nordic Ski Club as part of the marathon is to recognize a pioneer of skiing on the Kenai Peninsula. This year, bib No. 1 was reserved in honor of Ninilchik's Edward Jackinsky, who died last year, and worn by his grandson, Morgan Jones of Homer. According to the ski club's press release, Jackinsky learned to ski on barrel staves and then on homemade birch skis. Jackinsky continued to ski while in the Army and was awarded a medal for his attempt to rescue two companions buried in a snowslide.

Kent Peterson won the men's 43-kilmeter race while Jones took the 21-kilometer event. Megan Corazza won the women's 43-kilometer event and Leslie Klaar won the 21-kilometer event.
