Area chambers set schedules

· The Nikiski Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon today at Nikiski Fire Station 1. The speaker will be Rachael Parra with North Peninsula Recreational Services. For more information, call Judene at 776-5551.

Canned food drive events planned

A "Pint Size Workshop" cooking class is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturdays through April 29 at Allen and Peterson Cooking and Appliance Center in Kenai. This weeks class will teach students how to make waffle cone parfaits.

Cost of admission to the class is two cans of nonperishable food or a $2 donation to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank.

Curves of Kenai and Soldotna will hold their annual food drive for the food bank during the month of March.

Berry growers offer information

Alaska Berry Growers will meet 1 p.m. Monday at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building. Opportunities for harvesting and growing wild Alaska berries will be discussed.

Alliance luncheon to planned

The Alaska Industry Alliance will meet at noon Tuesday at Paradisos in Kenai. The presentation will be on "Project Grad," an outreach program that provides professional development clinics, scholarships and other incentives for young Alaskans to pursue college and technical training.

Workshop to open doors

The Small Business Development Center will host a workshop on Opening the Doors to Business Planning at 2 p.m. March 23 in Suite 16 of the Red Diamond Center. The fee for the workshop is $25.

Builders seek entries for Parade

The Kenai Peninsula Builders Association is seeking entries for the Parade of Homes, an event held in conjunction with the Home Show, held April 8 and 9. Licensed residential contractors are invited to showcase homes.

Scholarships offered

The Kenai Peninsula Builders Association is offering the Shelby Johnson Memorial Scholarship to Kenai Peninsula high school seniors and juniors. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

Applicants must be planning to attend a college or university within Alaska and planning to pursue a building-related career.

Unemployment tax refunds available

Alaskans who worked for more than one employer during 2005 may be eligible for unemployment tax refunds.

According to the Alaska Department of Labor, workers with two jobs who had more than $139.50 in unemployment taxes deducted for the year may apply for a refund.

BBB cautions against tax preparation fraud

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be wary of tax preparers with "too good to be true" offers. Unscrupulous tax preparers may incorrectly fill out tax forms to give a tax payer a larger return that they deserve. The IRS investigates suspicious returns and holds taxpayers responsible for incorrect information.

Bed & breakfast meeting set

The Kenai Peninsula Bed and Breakfast Association will meet at 1 p.m. March 25 at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center. Jim Kuhnsman from Alaskan Serenity B and B will conduct a mini workshop on telephone etiquette in preparation for answering the associations 800 number.
