ANCHORAGE (AP) -- A 33-year-old Anchorage man has been charged with federal drug violations for allegedly trying to smuggle the drug known as Ecstasy into the state.

Michael D'Angelo Bell was arrested Thursday at Anchorage International Airport. He was charged with importation of Ecstasy and smuggling. Both are felonies.

Bell was carrying more than four pounds of Ecstasy when he was arrested, prosecutors said.

It's the first investigation in Alaska involving Ecstasy, the prosecutors said.

Ecstasy is one of the so-called ''club drugs'' concocted by underground chemists and commonly used by young people at nightclubs, concerts and all-night dance parties.
