FAIRBANKS (AP) -- The chief of staff of the Air Force will appear in Fairbanks next month.

Gen. John P. Jumper will speak April 5 at the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce's Military Appreciation Banquet.

Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, said Jumper also will tour Eielson Air Force Base.

Jumper is the former commander of Air Combat Command at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va. He also served as NATO commander of Allied Air Forces in central Europe.

Jumper began his Air Force career as a second lieutenant in 1966. He became a general in 1997. He has more than 4,000 flight hours in various aircraft, including more than 1,400 combat hours in Southeast Asia, according to a Congressional Quarterly biography.

Stevens said Jumper, who grew up in the military, lived in Alaska for about a year as a child.
