Shenanigans planned todayBy JOSEPH ROBERTIAPeninsula Clarion Once again it's March 17, a festive time when everyone's blood runs green for a day. Pubs, clubs, schools and households all over the country are turning their thoughts to shamrocks and shenanigans, and all things Irish.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun of the 12th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade in Soldotna.
"It's grown and grown over the last few years, so we don't know how many people will come, but we expect a lot," said Mike Sweeney, owner of Sweeney's Clothing and one of the people organizing the event.
The parade begins on the Kenai Spur Highway in front of Bailey's Furniture Store at 1 p.m. It will travel east toward the Sterling Highway for several blocks, and end at Smith Way.
The best viewing for the parade is usually right around the Soldotna Plaza area, according to Sweeney.
Following the parade, an Irish dinner will be held at the Soldotna Sports Center at 5:30 p.m.
"There will be corn beef and cabbage, and all that good stuff," Sweeney said.
He recommends getting tickets to the dinner in advance and getting there early because it can fill up fast.
"We had over 200 people last year," he said.
Tickets to the dinner can be purchased in advance at Sweeney's. The cost is $5 for children and $10 for adults.
The dinner will feature entertainment. There will be Irish comedy and music by more than 20 Irish folk artists. There also will be silent and live auctions at 7 p.m. with numerous items to bid on, including guided fishing trips as some of the more prestigious offerings. There will be numerous door prizes, as well.
The evening festivities will wind down with a fireworks display at 9 p.m.
