Military academy accepting applications

The Alaska Military Youth Academy is accepting applications for the fall 2003 Challenge Program session.

Each session begins with a 5 1/2-month residential school, followed by a 12- to 14-month after-care program. During the nearly six months at the academy, students live a military lifestyle while attending academic classes, participating in a demanding physical fitness program and learning healthy living habits, teamwork and leadership skills.

To be accepted for an academy Challenge class, applicants must be volunteers, 16 to 18 years old, willing to commit to a drug-, alcohol- and tobacco-free setting and mentally capable of successfully participating in a demanding program.

The Alaska Military Youth Academy is near Anchorage at the Camp Carroll Training Site at Fort Richardson. It is one of three state-run secondary schools, is accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and of Colleges and Universities and is an Army JROTC site.

For admissions information, call (907) 384-6015. Information also may be requested by mail at AMYA Admissions and Records Section, P.O. Box 5727, Fort Richardson, AK 99505 or online at
