Teams of students from the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District participated in the statewide Battle of the Books competition Feb. 23 to 27. Peninsula teams took the state championship in three of the four divisions, with a sixth-place standing in the remaining category.
The Skyview High School team beat Bartlett High, Su Valley High and Valdez High in sudden-elimination rounds in the final match for a championship high-school finish.
The Homer Middle School team tied with Galena's IDEA program for the state championship in the seventh- and eighth-grade division. Other teams competiting in the finals were Northwest Arctic, Valdez, Mat Su and Anchorage. Homer and Galena were tied at the end of the match, and a tie was declared after nine sudden-elimination questions.
The Soldotna Elementary team tied for sixth-place in the fifth- and sixth-grade category, matching wits with Anchorage and Dillingham.
In the third- and fourth-grade division, the Connections home-school team won the championship with a three-question lead over Bering Strait, Alyeska, Mat Su and Anchorage.
More than 120 teams participated in the statewide competition.
