Baby MitzvahDiapers for little ones in need
A Mitzvah is at the heart of the Jewish Faith, it simply means a good deed from the heart, says Jackie Barsis of the Jewish Congregation of the Kenai Peninsula. "It means bringing relief to those in need. It could be in the form of an item, service or a word of honor and or encouragement. To Mitzvah or not to Mitzvah, is an opportunity we have to make God's creation a better place in our every day experience," she said. The Jewish Congregation of the Kenai Peninsula, Briat Elohim (God's Creation) which has been in existence since 1970, recently was the recipient of a grant from The Jewish Federation of America to provide a public service program for the Kenai Peninsula.
The Jewish Federation of America represents 157 Jewish Federations and 400 independent Jewish communities in North America, and is one of the top ten charities on the continent. According to Barsis, the Federation partners with community leaders and organizations to assist in everything from disaster relief, to helping vulnerable populations both abroad and at home. Services may include support for seniors and children in need, to victims of violence and hunger. The Jewish Federations of America is dedicated to strengthening Jewish communities around the world. "The goal of our congregation is to give back to our community by offering diapers to families at no charge. We purchase the diapers locally, and give them to anyone who needs them," said Barsis.
The diapers are available Tuesday's from 11:00am to 2:00pm at 315 South Kobuk, Suite A next to the original Kaladi Brothers coffee house, or by calling Leonor at 262-4949. "Several women have seen the posters and already come by. This is really a fun project. I love meeting the Moms and Dads. To Mitzvah or not to Mitzvah, that is the question," smiled Fraser. Diapers will be given out while supplies last.
