Senate approves name change for Fairbanks airport

Posted: Sunday, March 18, 2001

JUNEAU (AP) -- The Senate on Friday passed a bill to rename the Fairbanks International Airport after the late William Ransom Wood.

Under the measure, the state-owned and operated airport would become the ''William R. Wood Fairbanks International Airport.''

Bill sponsor Sen. Gary Wilken, R-Fairbanks, spoke in praise of Wood before the measure passed 16-0.

''A community only builds an airport once every hundred years,'' Wilken said. ''I'd say that the good Lord only builds a Bill Wood every 100 years.''

Wood was the longtime president of the University of Alaska, a Fairbanks mayor, a published poet, and the driving force behind community projects. He was named Alaskan of the Year in 1985.

Wood, 94, died Feb. 25 after a long illness.
