Search continues for two missing snowmachiners

Posted: Sunday, March 18, 2001

ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Searchers pulled a snowmachine belonging to Nathan Evan of Marshall from the Yukon River near Russian Mission on Friday afternoon, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Evan, 29, has been missing since Tuesday. Earlier, villagers discovered snowmachine tracks disappearing into an open lead on the river. Searchers will continuing to drag the river for Evan's body, a trooper spokesman said.

Meanwhile, ground and air crews had no luck Saturday in the search for another man missing in western Alaska. Mike Wassilie, 47, of Akiachak, has been missing for a week. His mother reported he was heading 20 miles away, from Akiachak to Nunapitchuk by snowmachine.

Blowing snow and poor visibility hurt the search efforts Thursday, but Friday skies cleared. Six planes and about 80 people on snowmachines were reported to be looking for Wassilie.
