ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Two Anchorage hospitals are planning construction projects over the next couple of years that together will cost more than $50 million.

Providence Alaska Medical Center is building a new emergency room and outpatient surgery center, while Alaska Regional Hospital is renovating its lobby and several of its departments.

Providence plans to break ground on its $30 million expansion next month. Officials say Providence has outgrown its existing emergency department.

Alaska Regional will renovate its outpatient surgery center and adding a separate entrance to the department. Officials say the work will start in June and will cost $26 million.

Both projects are scheduled for completion in the summer of 2002.
