JUNEAU (AP) A taxi driver was beaten and robbed and his cab stolen, police said.

The Cabco driver, whose name was not released, was found by a passer-by around 10:30 p.m. Monday in the Jordan Creek Center area. He was taken to Bartlett Regional Hospital where he was treated for a closed-head injury and general trauma to his head and face, said hospital spokeswoman Marijo Toner.

The man was released from the hospital Tuesday morning.

His cab was recovered near Park Place Condominiums in the Mendenhall Valley around 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Fellow cabby Dan Vernetti, a friend of the victim, said the driver was trying to make rent money.

I don't know how he and his wife are going to do it now,'' he said. It's just terrible.''
