CIA boys cruise into semifinals: Ninilchik boys succumb to intense pressure of Point Hope

Posted: Friday, March 19, 2010

Point Hope scored 52 first-half points en route to a 73-42 dismantling of Ninilchik in the first round of the boys Class 2A state basketball tournament on Thursday at the Sullivan Arena.

"This was the first time we ever had the mercy rule against us," said Wolverines head coach Keith Presley. "That about sums it up."

Ninilchik will play Hydaburg at 9:45 a.m. today in the fourth-place semifinals.

In other action Thursday, Cook Inlet Academy defeated Noatak 74-53.

The Harpooners scored 32 points off of Ninilchik turnovers. The Wolverines committed 21 turnovers in the game. Point Hope had 11.

"We knew they didn't have the best ballhandlers," Point Hope head coach Rex Rock Sr said. Rock said he wanted to put pressure on Ninilchik.

"We basically feed off of our defensive intensity," he said.

"We just weren't ready for their speed," Presley said. "Their pressure on the outside is tremendous."

Ebrulik Frankson paced the Harpooners with 31 points. Zacharia Lane had 15 and Adam Sage scored 13. Jeff Klapak led all Ninilchik scorers with 25 points. Sam Bennett had 16.

Point Hope shot 52.5 percent from the field. Ninilchik shot 34 percent.

"With a team like Point Hope, you have to capitalize every time you have a chance," Presley said.

Point Hope returned three starters and four players from last year. With several new team members, Rock said his team has surprised him this season.

"This group has exceeded my expectations," he said.

With most of his team returning next year, Presley said playing at state will be a learning experience for next season.

CIA boys 74, Noatak 53

Stefan Reischach, David Reischach and Matt Moffis combined for 65 points to lead Cook Inlet Academy past Noatak in the first round of the Class 2A state basketball tournament at Sullivan Arena on Thursday. The Eagles take on Klawock tonight at 6:45 p.m. in the semifinals.

David had a team-high 24 points and 12 rebounds. Moffis had 21 points and Stefan had 20 points and 17 rebounds.

"We had a huge game from Stefan," said Eagles head coach Justin Franchino. "He played a monster game."

CIA sprang to a 22-point lead by halftime and never looked back. CIA held the Lynx to just 12 first-half points.

"We jumped on them right from the start," Franchino said.

CIA had three goals for the game -- out-rebound Noatak, have a higher shooting percentage and fewer turnovers. The Eagles achieved two of those. CIA shot 56 percent from the field to Noatak's 32.8 percent. The Eagles out-rebounded the Lynx 43 to 26 but had 25 turnovers in the game, four more than Noatak.

"We killed them on the rebounds and shooting percentage," Franchino said.

"Our focus today was getting rebounds," he added. "It's such a huge thing to control the boards."
