Eagles snatch up another pet dog in Valdez

VALDEZ (AP) -- There's been another report of bald eagles flying away with a family pet in this Prince William Sound community.

An observers said two eagles pounced on a neighborhood dog late last month, fatally mauling it before one of the birds flew off with the body.

The attack was witnessed by Dale Bard, who told the Valdez Star he watched from about 30 feet away as the eagles attacked the small white and brown long-haired dog.

The attack was similar to one that made national news in the spring of 1990.

An eagle swooped down near a Valdez service station and snatched a Chihuahua-type dog belonging to a Georgia couple touring Alaska in their motor home.

Dennis Fleming, the attendant on duty said at the time: ''The dog gave one yelp, and that was it.''
