Thomas Reese Jones, 83, died in his sleep Dec. 18, 2010.

Reese was born Dec, 15, 1927, to Thomas H. and Emma (Reese) Jones, in Arlington, Wash. Although the couple had lived in Alaska for a number of years, they spent the first few years of Mr. Jones' life outside with family, before returning to make their family home in Seward in the early 1930s.

Mr. Jones and his first wife, Gloria June Woods, met while both attended Seward High School. After graduating in 1945, Mr. Jones spent two years in the U.S. Navy, stationed at several locations around the country. Upon his return to Seward he and June married on Dec. 26, 1948. They became the parents of one son and two daughters and made their home in Seward for the next 18 years. During that time Mr. Jones worked at various times for the Alaska Railroad, the Seward docks and running his own propane delivery business. He and a partner founded and operated City Express for a number of years, making deliveries throughout the area. After relocating to Anchorage after the earthquake, Mr. Jones worked first as a carpenter, then as a driver for SeaLand Freight from 1970 until the mid 1990s.

The couple divorced in 1969, and in 1970 Mr. Jones met and married his second wife, Betty Jean "Tina" Jones. Together they moved to Peters Creek, where they lived until her death in 1997. They had planned to retire together to Seldovia, and in 2003 Mr. Jones moved to the property they had bought for that purpose. He was in the process of finishing a new home on the property at the time of his death.

His family said: "Reese will be remembered dearly by his friends and family as a man who would always lend a helping hand, build a house, buy a cup of coffee and tell a pun. Over the years he enjoyed a number of hobbies such as cooking, reading, fishing, collecting model trains, and socializing wherever he lived. He was famous for making friends with any dog he encountered, and in Seldovia he could often be seen getting sniffed by passing canines who knew he might have a treat in his pocket."

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife, Tina Jones; his former wife, June Woods King; his parents, Thomas and Emma Jones; his sister, Carol Jones Breitenbach and her son, Michael; his son, Thomas Franklin Jones; and his stepson, Bradley Wooden.

He is survived by daughters, Carol Carpenter, of Palmer; and Patsyann Jones Coburn, of Issaquah, Wash.; his son-in-law James Carpenter, of Palmer; his granddaughter and grandson-in-law Jessica and Jesse Skaggs, of Palmer; his grandson Franklin Carpenter, of Seldovia; his grandson Thomas Coburn, of Issaquah; his grandson Benjamin Jones Coburn, of Issaquah; and his great-grandsons Hunter and Tyler Skaggs, of Palmer; as well as by many cousins, relatives and friends who will miss him greatly.

A memorial service will be held on his property in Seldovia, Alaska on June 25, 2011, and his ashes will be laid to rest at the Oddfellow's Cemetery in Seward. For information please contact Carol Carpenter at 8060 S. Ivanhoe, Palmer, AK, 99645; or Patsyann Jones Coburn at patsyannjones@live.com.
