Ice Dogs take 2 from Bears

The Fairbanks Ice Dogs swept the visiting Kenai River Brown Bears on Friday and Saturday in North American Hockey League action.

The Brown Bears fall to 26-23-6, good for fourth place in the West Division. It increasingly looks like Kenai River will play Fairbanks, the West champion at 39-13-3, in the first round of the playoffs.

The Bears are six points behind third-place Alaska Avalanche of Palmer. Kenai River has three games left -- Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center against Dawson Creek -- while Alaska visits Fairbanks on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

On Saturday in front of 2,242, the Ice Dogs won 5-1 by taking a 5-0 lead before Brad Duwe scored in the third period. Josh Benton had 24 saves for Kenai River, while Steve Perry had 22 saves for the Ice Dogs.

On Friday, Fairbanks goalie Joe Phillippi saved 26 shots in a 4-0 victory in front of 2,009.

The Brown Bears outshot the Ice Dogs 26-16 in the game.

"In the first period, we really limited their chances, but in the second we gave up too many chances and in the third we had to kill off a lot of time," Fairbanks coach Josh Hauge told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. "Joe was outstanding."

Matt Millis got the Ice Dogs started with a goal in the first period and a goal in the second period as the Ice Dogs grabbed a 2-0 lead.

Zach Vierling added another goal early in the third against Mathias Dahlstrom, who made 12 saves. Fairbanks had 24 minutes of penalties in the third period, but all that came out of it for the Brown Bears was a short-handed goal by Jack Callahan.

"We were conservative with the puck, but at the same tie opportunistic," Hauge said.
