WASHINGTON (AP) The National Association of Evangelicals announced Monday that its new president will be the Rev. Ted Haggard, who leads Colorado's largest Protestant church.

The evangelical body lists a constituency of 51 conservative denominations with 43,000 congregations, individual congregations from 27 other denominations, and various para-church'' ministries.

Haggard, 46, will serve part time and continue as pastor of the non-denominational New Life Church in Colorado Springs, which was founded in 1985, now has 8,700 members and is building a 12,000-seat facility near the Air Force Academy.

Haggard succeeds the Rev. Leith Anderson of Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie, Minn. Anderson took over in 1991 when the Rev. Kevin Mannoia resigned after board members turned against his plan to cooperate with groups affiliated with the more liberal National Council of Churches.
