Peninsula should be proud of Games effort

Posted: Tuesday, March 21, 2006

Congratulations to the Kenai Peninsula Borough for hosting a successful Arctic Winter Games! As an official I had access to many areas which were supported by volunteers. The kindness and courteousness extended from cooks, medical, security guards, to the many volunteers.

Although I enjoyed meeting the athletes most, I was impressed by the continued effort to improve venues for the athletes. The cooks planned new menus in order to provide healthier choices for the athletes, volunteers worked through the night to ready the rink for 7 a.m. speed skating races after hosting the opening ceremonies the night before, our announcer brought blankets from home to keep skaters warm as they waited for their next race in the heat box and wind blocks were erected to keep the wind and cold from blowing into the rink when the original plan didn’t work.

As I place this experience in my fondest of memories it is my wish that the people of the Kenai Peninsula also embrace with pride the tremendous effort extended on the part of each of them.
