Soccer sign-ups open

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Kenai Peninsula is currently taking registrations for the 2010 outdoor soccer season. Youth ages 4 to 18 are welcome to participate. All registrations can be done at the Kenai Rec Center.

Deadline for youth sixth-grade through 12th-grade is April 16 at 4 p.m. Practices start the week of June 7.

Deadline for youth 4 years to fifth-grade is April 23 at 4 p.m. Practices start the week of June 14.

Garden club plans bonus workshops

Central Peninsula Garden Club has a bonus program this month about orchid growing and blossom challenges presented by Anchorage orchid expert Sally Karibellnikoff. Karibellnikoff has been growing orchids and teaching others how to maintain them for many years and has more than 1,200 orchids herself. She will be presenting a power point program Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road. The meeting is open to the public; refreshments will be served.

Karibellnikoff will also lead an orchid repotting workshop on Saturday from noon to 3:30pm. Special orchids will be available for purchase at a variety of reasonable prices. Workshop participants will learn repotting orchid methods with Karibellnikoff's custom orchid potting mix. Preregister by contacting Marion Nelson at 283 4632 or The workshop will be held at the Soldotna United Methodist Church on Binkley Street in Soldotna. The workshop fee is $10.

Annual Garden Club membership dues are $20 individual, $30 for couples.

Stephens earns academic laurels

Leah Rose Stephens of Kenai was named to the President's List for the 2009 Winter Quarter at Western Washington University. Stephens is a 2009 graduate of Kenai Central High School. The President's List includes the top 10 percent of each class at Western Washington.

Watkins named to dean's list.

Hannah Christine Watkins of Kenai was named to the dean's list for the 2009 fall semester at the University of Rochester (N.Y.). Watkins, a biomedical engineering major, is a graduate of Kenai Central High School.

Esquiro, Walker welcome son

Kristopher Walker and Amanda Esquiro of Kenai announce the birth of their son, Owen Mark Walker, at 10:24 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2010 at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces and measured 20 inches.

Owen's grandparents are Kevin and Judy Walker of Kenai, and Gabrielle Esquiro of Blaine, Wash. His great-grandparents are Gene and Velda Geller of Kenai, Ralph Walker of Yuma, Ariz., and Wilhelmina Valenuzela of Lynden, Wash.

Swim lessons on deck

The Kenai Pool will be offering American Red Cross Swim Lessons, Level 2. This is for children age 5 and older. It will run from March 29 through April 28 and meet on Mondays and Wednesday from 5:10 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Sign up at the Kenai pool. The cost is $50.

Cribbage tourney continues

The 16th annual Cook Inlet Lions Cribbage tournament continues at 3 p.m. Saturdays through April, at the American Legion Kenai Post No. 20 at 902 Cook Street, Kenai. It is open to the public. For more information, call Raymond at 776-5688 or Bob at 776-5339.

Kenai library events announced

The Kenai Community Library at 163 Main St. Loop, will host the following activities in February: Russian story time at 3:15 p.m. Monday; pre-school story time at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday; Wee read at 11 a.m. Wednesday; and After School read at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The library's hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

School programs continue

Tot Time and Home-school programs begin at the Kenai Recreation Center.

Tot Time will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The cost will be $1 for youth ages 1 to 5 years old.

Home-school will be held from 12:30 from 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. The cost will be $1 per child.

Kenaitze center accepting applications

The Kenaitze Indian Tribe Early Childhood Center is accepting applications for its Headstart program. Children who were at least 3 years old by September 1, 2009, are eligible. For more information, call 283-0707.


Smith named to dean's list

Justin Smith of Nikiski was named to the Dean's List at Montana State University College of Arts and Architecture for the fall 2009 semester. Smith is a 2008 graduate of Nikiski High School. Dean's list students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above and pass 12 or more credit hours during the semester.

Ernsts welcome granddaughter

Kyle and Ellee (Ernst) Mietzner of St. Louis, Mo., announce the birth of their daughter, Evangeline Meimi Schell Mietzner at 4 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2010 in St. Louis. Evangeline weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 21 inches.

Her grandparents are Randy and Carol Ernst of Nikiski and Dave and Becky Mietzner of Chattanooga, Tenn. Her great-grandparents are Meimi Taurianen of Nikiski, Sally Ernst of Nikiski and Robert and Lucy Schell of North Carolina.

NPRSA activities announced

The North Peninsula Recreation Service Area offers the following activities:

* Full swing golf simulator -- Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The simulator offers a driving range or more than 20 world-class 18-hole courses to play. Golf gift certificates are available.

* Open gym times for the following groups: Toddler time - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 to 12:30 p.m.; home-school open gym - Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m.; middle school gym Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; family gym Saturdays from 1 to 3 p.m.; Adult Open Gym Volleyball Thursdays from 8 to 9:30 p.m.; and Adult Open Gym Basketball Saturdays from 3 to 5 p.m.

* Arts and Crafts Class for first through sixth grade youth Fridays from 4 to 5:15 p.m., $3 a class or a 10-punch card for $25.

Schwalb family welcomes new member

Kenneth Schwalb and Rebecca Thomas announce the birth of their daughter, MacKenzie Rayne Schwalb, at 10:18 a.m. on Feb. 2, 2010 at Central Peninsula Hospital. She weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measured 19 1/2 inches.

MacKenzie joins sisters Abigail (7) and Leondreah (4) of Nikolaevsk; and half-sisters Danya and Xenaretta Schwalb of Nikiski. Her grandparents are Al and Sandy Thomas of Nikolaevsk, Fritz Schwalb of Nikiski and Patricia Correson of Soldotna.


Dammeyer family grows

Colleen and M. David Dammeyer of Soldotna announce the birth of their son, John Ogilvie Dammeyer, at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Woman's Way Midwifery in Soldotna. He weighed 8 pounds and 12 ounces.

He joins siblings, Dyson, Declan, Isaac, Lucy, Alexander, and Nicole. His grandparents are Bill and Gail Dammeyer of Soldotna and John and Elizabeth McGowan of Pennsylvania.
