SITKA (AP) -- Sitka Sound sac roe herring appears plentiful this season although the quality of the fish is falling short of expectations.
Seiners caught well over half of the Sitka Sound sac roe herring quota Sunday as the season opened with a 45-minute fishing period. But some processors said Tuesday that product quality, in terms of roe size and percentage, was less than desired.
The annual derby-type fishery puts millions of dollars on the line for a few minutes' work.
The harvest for the opening was calculated at 3,350 tons. The quota for this year has been set at 5,120 tons. The fleet stood down Tuesday in order to give processors enough time to catch up and be ready for a second opening to catch the remainder of the quota.
