NORTH POLE (AP) -- A Delta boy was killed Tuesday night when the car he was in riding struck a dead moose, Alaska State Troopers said.

Vitaly Malyk, 5, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before midnight on Jack Warren Road near Delta.

The car was driven by his 15-year-old brother, Yuri Malyk, who was wearing a seat belt and was not seriously injured.

Troopers said they received a call reporting a car struck a moose at 11:54 p.m. About six minutes later, while troopers were contacting a charity to salvage the moose, the car driven by Yuri Malyk struck the dead animal.

Troopers said neither excessive speed nor alcohol appeared to be contributing factors to the accident.
