Former Funny River resident Brenda "Kay" Watkins died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was 56.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Salida, Colo., her home at the time of her death. A service will be held at a later date in Funny River.
Mrs. Watkins was born Jan. 23, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, to L.K. and Myrt Gregory. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Colorado and her master's degree in counseling psychology from Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage. Her teaching career included Pueblo Central High School and Buena Vista High School in Colorado and at Yakutat High School in Alaska.
She also served an internship at West Central Mental Health Clinic in Salida, and she and her husband owned and operated Gwin's Lodge in Cooper Landing for seven years.
"Tough-minded but tender-hearted, Kay touched many students' lives in a positive manner," her family said. "She was loved by many and shall be missed by all."
Mrs. Watkins married Winston Tony Watkins in Clovis, N.M., in May 1961.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Michelle.
Mrs. Watkins is survived by her husband, Winston; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Rick Walker; grandchildren Kyle and Danielle Walker; sister and brother-in-law, Jerri and George Willis; brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Kathy Gregory; aunt, Laverne Martin; and mother-in-law, Marjorie Watkins.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any domestic violence shelter, homeless shelter, educational institution or project, the American Cancer Society or any other charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements were made by the Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida.
